Quick answer: window blinds use individual hard slats that tilt, while window shades use a continuous piece of fabric or a cellular structure that raises and lowers. People often use the words interchangeably, but the construction, appearance, light control and cleaning routine are different.

SunShieldor currently specializes in full-blackout window shades: roller, zebra, cellular and Roman styles. It does not currently sell slatted Venetian, wood or vertical blinds.
Window blinds vs. shades at a glance
| Feature | Blinds | Shades |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Individual horizontal or vertical slats | Continuous fabric, layered bands, honeycomb cells or fabric folds |
| Light adjustment | Slats tilt to redirect light | Shade raises, lowers or aligns layered material |
| Appearance | Structured and architectural | Softer, cleaner or more fabric-forward |
| Blackout potential | Light can pass between slats and around edges | Blackout material can block light through the shade; edge gaps still depend on fit |
| Cleaning | Each slat may need dusting | Usually cleaned as a larger fabric surface according to material instructions |
| Motorization | May control tilt, lift or both | Commonly controls raising and lowering; zebra shades also adjust band alignment |
What counts as a window shade?
A window shade is a covering made from one main material assembly rather than separate rigid slats. The four SunShieldor styles work differently:
- Blackout roller shades roll a continuous coated fabric around a tube.
- Blackout zebra shades use alternating sheer and solid bands for adjustable privacy before blackout alignment.
- Blackout cellular shades use honeycomb-shaped air pockets that add an insulating structure.
- Blackout Roman shades form soft fabric folds when raised.
Compare all four in the roller vs. zebra vs. cellular vs. Roman guide.
Which gives better blackout: blinds or shades?
Blackout shades are generally the clearer choice when room darkening is the priority because the blackout material forms a continuous surface. However, no inside-mounted shade can eliminate every possible edge gap. Accurate measurements, sufficient overlap and the correct mounting method matter as much as fabric opacity.
Read the Inside Mount vs. Outside Mount guide and follow the window measuring instructions before ordering.
Which is easier to clean?
Blinds have many separate slats, so dust can collect on each surface. Shades provide a larger continuous surface but must be cleaned according to the fabric or coating. Use gentle dust removal and follow the product instructions; avoid soaking motors, headrails or fabrics that are not designed for washing.
Which is better for insulation?
Construction matters more than the label “blind” or “shade.” Among SunShieldor’s current styles, cellular shades usually provide the strongest insulating structure because their honeycomb cells hold layers of still air. Blackout roller, zebra and Roman shades can reduce direct sunlight, but blackout alone is not an insulation rating.

Cordless or motorized?
Both blinds and shades may be available with manual or powered controls, depending on the product. SunShieldor shades are offered as cordless or motorized models. Motor packages include a remote, with selected Zigbee, Matter and solar-panel combinations available for compatible applications.

Standard size or custom size?
Standard-size shades use predefined width-and-height combinations and are convenient when they fit the window. Custom shades are made to the finished dimensions entered by the customer and are priced by billable square foot. Measure every window separately before ordering.

- Choose roller shades for a streamlined blackout surface.
- Choose zebra shades for adjustable daylight and privacy before blackout alignment.
- Choose cellular shades when insulating structure is a priority.
- Choose Roman shades for decorative soft folds.
- Choose motorized shades for remote operation, scheduled routines or hard-to-reach windows.
Frequently asked questions
Are roller blinds actually blinds?
“Roller blinds” is a common retail and search term, but technically the product is a roller shade because it uses continuous fabric rather than individual slats.
Are zebra blinds blinds or shades?
Zebra blinds are more precisely called zebra shades or layered shades. They use two layers of alternating bands, not rigid tilting slats.
Do shades provide privacy at night?
Full-blackout material provides privacy when the shade is fully closed and correctly aligned. Zebra shades must be positioned so the solid bands overlap; edge gaps still depend on measurement and installation.
Are all SunShieldor products blackout?
Yes. SunShieldor’s current roller, zebra, cellular and Roman shade assortment is positioned as full-blackout. Review each product page for its exact material, colors, sizes and control options.
Can shades be made to an exact size?
Yes. SunShieldor custom-size products accept finished width and height in inches, subject to minimum-width and billable-area rules. Confirm the calculated total and cart details before payment.
