How to Order Custom Window Shades
Use this guide before ordering a made-to-measure SunShieldor roller, zebra, cellular or Roman shade. Custom shades are made to the finished width and height you submit, so please review every selection before checkout.
How to order a custom shade in 6 steps
1. Choose your shade style
Select blackout roller, zebra, blackout cellular, or Roman. All current SunShieldor shade styles use full-blackout materials or construction as described on their product pages.
2. Measure the window
Measure each window separately with a steel tape measure. Enter the finished width and height in inches. The minimum finished width is 11.82 in (30 cm). Read the illustrated window measuring guide before entering dimensions.
3. Select the mount type
- Inside Mount: the shade fits within the window opening. Check that the frame has enough unobstructed depth.
- Outside Mount: the shade covers the opening or trim. Additional overlap can reduce side light gaps.
4. Choose cordless or a motor package
Cordless operation is included in the base custom-shade price. Motorized packages are charged once per shade:
- Remote Rechargeable + Remote: add $155
- Remote Rechargeable + Remote + Solar Panel: add $184
- Zigbee + Remote: add $225
- Zigbee + Remote + Solar Panel: add $254
- Matter + Remote: add $225
- Matter + Remote + Solar Panel: add $254
Zigbee and Matter smart-home functions require a compatible controller or gateway. Remote-only packages do not require a smart-home hub.
5. Review the calculated price
Billable area is calculated as width × height ÷ 144. Every custom shade has an 8 sq. ft. minimum charge. Above 8 sq. ft., a fraction below 0.5 rounds down and 0.5 or above rounds up to the next whole square foot.
The product page shows a per-square-foot unit rate. This is not the price of a complete shade. The calculator multiplies the unit rate by the billable area and adds the selected motor package. A separate $20 base custom-shipping charge is added at checkout; the unit rate already includes the $1.80 per billable sq. ft. standard-shipping allocation.
6. Check the cart before payment
After selecting Add to cart, confirm that the cart displays the correct:
- shade style and color;
- finished width and height;
- inside or outside mount;
- cordless or motor package;
- billable area and final line total.
Do not manually reduce the cart quantity. For custom products, the cart quantity represents billable square feet rather than the number of shades. If the cart shows quantity 1 or the total does not match the calculator, do not complete payment—take a screenshot and contact SunShieldor.
Ordering more than one shade in the same custom size
Each custom shade is made and charged separately. If you need two or more shades with the same width, height, color, mount type and control package, configure one shade completely and select Add to cart. Then return to the product page and repeat the same configuration once for each additional shade.
- Enter the width and height and choose all required options for the first shade.
- Check the calculated total, then add it to the cart.
- Return to the same product page and repeat for the second, third or additional shade.
- In the cart, confirm that the total billable quantity equals billable square feet per shade × number of shades.
- For motorized shades, confirm that the motor-upgrade quantity equals the number of shades.
Do not use the cart quantity selector to choose the number of shades. The custom-product quantity represents billable square feet, not pieces. Repeating the complete add-to-cart process ensures that every shade receives the correct dimensions, options and motor charge.
Example: One 32 in × 68 in shade is billed at 15 sq. ft. Three identical cordless shades should show a combined billable quantity of 45 sq. ft. If all three are motorized, the cart must also contain three matching motor upgrades. If the quantity or total is different, do not pay—take a screenshot and contact SunShieldor.
Single-shade price example
A 32 in × 68 in shade has an exact area of 15.11 sq. ft. The billable area rounds to 15 sq. ft. The shade price is the selected style’s unit rate multiplied by 15, plus any selected motor package. The separate $20 base custom-shipping charge is added at checkout.
