Standard-Size vs. Custom-Size Window Shades: How to Choose

Tape measure, shade fabric and remote used to compare standard and custom window shades

The choice between a standard-size and custom-size window shade starts with finished dimensions. A standard shade can be the efficient option when a listed width and height fit the opening. A custom shade is the better path when the opening falls between listed sizes, requires specific overlap or needs coordinated dimensions across several windows.

What is a standard-size shade?

A standard product uses predefined width-and-height combinations. You choose the listed size, color and control configuration available on that product page. Standard products are useful when the dimensions already suit the opening and you do not need a made-to-measure finished size.

What is a custom-size shade?

A custom product lets you enter a finished width and height, choose inside or outside mount, select a color and then choose cordless or an available motor package. SunShieldor custom shades have a minimum finished width of 30 cm (11.82 in) and a minimum billable area of 8 sq. ft. per shade.

Fit differences that matter

An inside mount must fit within the recess and needs enough depth for the hardware. An outside mount covers the opening and can add overlap. A standard width should not be assumed to fit simply because it is close to the measured opening. Always compare the product’s finished dimensions with your installation plan.

How pricing differs

Standard products are priced by listed variant. Custom products calculate billable square footage from the entered dimensions and apply the product’s minimum billing rule. Motor packages and applicable shipping are added according to the selected options and checkout. Because prices may change, use the live calculator and cart rather than an older article or screenshot.

When standard size is usually the better choice

  • The listed finished width and height fit your opening.
  • You want a straightforward replacement for a common window size.
  • The available color and control configuration meet your needs.

When custom size is usually worth choosing

  • The window falls between listed sizes.
  • You need specific outside-mount overlap.
  • Several windows need coordinated finished dimensions.
  • A narrow, wide or unusually shaped opening requires closer planning.

Ordering more than one shade

For different window sizes, configure and add each shade separately so its dimensions and properties remain attached to the correct cart line. For multiple identical shades, configure the size once and use the product’s shade-count control as explained in the custom ordering guide. Do not manually reduce the calculated billable quantity.

Decision checklist

  1. Choose inside or outside mount.
  2. Measure every opening separately.
  3. Compare the measurement with listed standard sizes.
  4. If no listed size fits, use the custom calculator.
  5. Review color, control, mount type, finished dimensions and cart total before checkout.

Standard vs. custom FAQ

Can I trim a standard shade after purchase?

Do not assume a finished product can be trimmed. Choose a listed size that fits or order a custom finished width.

Is custom sizing always more expensive?

The final price depends on billable area, style, control package and shipping. Compare the live product totals rather than relying on a general rule.

Should I measure similar windows separately?

Yes. Openings that look identical can differ, so record each window before ordering.
