Zebra shades use two layers of alternating fabric bands inside a top cassette. Correct measurements must account for the window opening, cassette clearance and the coverage you expect when the bands are aligned for privacy.
Quick answer: For an inside mount, measure the opening at three widths and use the narrowest result. For an outside mount, measure the full area you want the shade and cassette to cover, adding overlap where the mounting surface allows.
Before measuring
- Use a rigid metal tape measure.
- Record dimensions as width × height in inches.
- Measure every window separately.
- Check handles, locks, trim and any other obstruction.
- Measure the window or planned coverage area, not an existing shade.
Inside-mount zebra shades
- Measure the clear inside width at the top, middle and bottom.
- Use the narrowest width.
- Measure the inside height at the left, center and right; use the longest usable height.
- Check that the top of the frame has enough unobstructed depth and height for the cassette and brackets.
- Confirm that the cassette will not interfere with handles or inward-opening parts.
An inside mount creates a built-in appearance. Because the fabric and hardware need operating clearance, small side gaps are normal. The layered fabric controls privacy through band alignment, while the mount and edge coverage influence the final room-darkening result.
Outside-mount zebra shades
- Measure the complete width you want covered, not only the glass.
- Add side overlap where wall or trim space allows.
- Select a flat, secure mounting position above the opening.
- Measure from that top position to the desired bottom coverage point.
- Check that the cassette and rolled fabric will clear trim and nearby fixtures.
Outside mounting can provide more edge coverage and is useful when the frame is shallow or obstructed.
Standard size or custom size?
Choose a listed standard size when its finished dimensions suit your opening and mounting plan. Choose a custom zebra shade when you need an exact finished width and height. Custom shades have a minimum finished width of 30 cm (11.82 in) and an 8 sq. ft. minimum billable area per finished shade.
Zebra shade ordering checklist
- Width and height are entered in the correct order.
- Inside Mount or Outside Mount matches the measurement method.
- The cassette has adequate mounting clearance.
- Color and control package are correct.
- Custom dimensions, billable quantity and cart total have been reviewed.

Zebra shade measuring FAQ
What width should I use for an inside mount?
Use the narrowest clear inside width from the top, middle and bottom measurements.
Why should I check cassette depth?
The top cassette and brackets need a flat, unobstructed mounting area. A shallow frame or nearby handle can prevent a proper inside mount.
Does blackout fabric guarantee a completely dark room?
No. Fabric, band alignment, mount type and edge gaps all affect the final result. Outside mounting generally provides more overlap.
