How to Install Window Shades: Inside- and Outside-Mount Checklist

Homeowner checking a window recess before inside- or outside-mount shade installation

A successful window-shade installation begins before the brackets are attached. The shade must match the intended mount, the mounting surface must be suitable, and nearby handles, trim and furniture must allow the fabric and bottom rail to move freely.

Reviewed October 25, 2026. This is a general planning checklist. Follow the hardware instructions supplied with the specific product and use an appropriately qualified installer when the mounting surface or access is uncertain.

Before installation

  • Confirm the product, finished size, color, mount type and control option.
  • Compare the shade width with the measured opening or coverage area.
  • Identify the mounting surface and appropriate fasteners.
  • Check handles, locks, trim, screens and furniture for clearance.
  • Keep the shade protected until the work area is ready.

Inside-mount checklist

An inside mount positions the shade within the window recess. Check that the recess is deep enough for the headrail and that the mounting surface is level and secure. Because window openings can vary, confirm the top, middle and bottom width measurements before installation.

  1. Mark bracket positions evenly according to the supplied instructions.
  2. Confirm both brackets sit at the same depth.
  3. Keep moving fabric and hardware clear of handles and locks.
  4. Attach the shade and test its full travel before final tightening.

Outside-mount checklist

An outside mount attaches above or around the opening. It can provide additional overlap and may reduce visible edge light. Confirm that there is enough flat mounting area and that the finished width covers the intended area without interfering with adjacent walls, doors or trim.

  1. Center the shade over the intended coverage area.
  2. Mark a level bracket line.
  3. Verify left, right, top and bottom overlap.
  4. Test clearance from handles, sill objects and door movement.

Motorized shade checks

Charge the motor as directed before testing. Pair the included remote according to the supplied instructions and confirm the shade stops correctly. Zigbee and Matter packages require compatible smart-home equipment for connected features. A solar panel is included only in the option that explicitly names it; position it according to its instructions and available daylight.

Final operation test

  • Raise and lower the shade through its full intended travel.
  • Confirm the fabric does not rub against trim or hardware.
  • Check that the bottom rail remains clear of the sill or floor.
  • Review visible side gaps and mount alignment.
  • For multiple shades, test each unit independently.

Common installation problems

The shade looks uneven: recheck bracket level and seating. The fabric rubs: confirm the headrail position and side clearance. Edge light is greater than expected: an inside mount naturally leaves operating gaps; an outside mount with more overlap may provide better coverage when the opening allows it.

Installation FAQ

Can every window use an inside mount?

No. The recess needs sufficient depth and a suitable mounting surface, and the hardware must clear handles and trim.

Does an outside mount reduce light gaps?

It can when the shade overlaps the opening sufficiently, but room construction and installation still affect the result.

Should I install a wide or high shade myself?

If access, weight or the mounting surface is uncertain, use an appropriately qualified installer rather than taking unnecessary risks.
