Nurseries and children’s rooms need window coverings that support sleep, privacy and easy daily use. A full-blackout fabric can reduce light through the shade itself, but the final result also depends on accurate measurements, mounting position and the gaps required for normal operation.
Reviewed October 25, 2026. This guide reflects the current SunShieldor range: full-blackout roller, zebra, cellular and Roman shades in cordless, motorized and custom-size configurations.
Quick answer: which blackout shade works best?
- Blackout roller shades: a clean, continuous fabric panel and a compact profile.
- Blackout cellular shades: a soft honeycomb structure that adds an insulating air-pocket design.
- Blackout Roman shades: a tailored fabric appearance with visible folds when raised.
- Blackout zebra shades: alternating bands for adjustable positioning; they do not form the same continuous panel as a roller shade.
Cordless or motorized for a child’s room?
Cordless shades avoid a hanging operating cord and are simple to raise or lower by hand. Motorized shades are useful when the window is high, furniture blocks access, or a caregiver wants to operate several shades by remote. SunShieldor’s current motor packages are rechargeable and include a remote. Zigbee and Matter packages require compatible smart-home equipment for app, automation or voice features.
Always install and use window coverings according to the included hardware instructions, and keep furniture and climbable objects appropriately positioned for the room.
Inside mount or outside mount?
An inside mount sits within the window recess and creates a built-in appearance. It requires enough depth and accurate measurements at multiple points. An outside mount overlaps the opening and can reduce visible edge light when the wall and trim allow sufficient coverage. No working shade can guarantee a perfectly dark room because edge gaps, trim and installation conditions vary.
Use the window measuring guide and compare inside and outside mounting before ordering.
Color and room planning
White and light gray shades can blend with pale walls, while dark gray creates stronger visual contrast. Color alone does not determine blackout performance; fabric construction, finished size and installation matter more. Review the room in daylight and at night before choosing.
Standard size or custom size?
Choose a standard size when the listed finished dimensions suit the opening. Use a custom-size shade when the opening falls between listed sizes or when precise coverage is important. SunShieldor custom shades use a minimum finished width of 30 cm (11.82 in) and a minimum billable area of 8 sq. ft. per shade. Nursery and kids’ room blackout shade FAQ
Do blackout shades make a nursery completely dark?
The fabric blocks light through the panel, but light can remain around the edges. Accurate measuring and suitable outside-mount overlap can reduce those gaps.
Are cordless shades suitable for frequently used windows?
They are a straightforward manual option when the window remains easy to reach. Motorization can be more convenient for blocked or high windows.
Which style has the simplest appearance?
A blackout roller shade uses one continuous panel and usually has the cleanest visual profile.
